Doña Francisquita is a precise portrait of the romantic Madrid of the 19th century, with its popular airs, its comic characters, which cannot be missing in any zarzuela, but also with an intense lyricism that perfectly portrays the love of the two protagonists, who develops in the midst of the conventions and restrictions of the time in which they have lived.
The story revolves around the romantic vicissitudes of Francisquita, a young and attractive girl, and Fernando. The ending, naturally, is happy, as the couple achieves their goal of ending up together, after much tug-of-war.
This zarzuela combines the elements of the comedy with music inspired by popular reminiscences, as can be seen in the well-known “Song of the Nightingale.”
