Gianni Schicchi e Il Tabarro
(G. Puccini)
Il Tabarro, based on La Houppelande, Didier Gold’s pièce noire, is Puccini's closest approach to the verismo genre. This one-act opera, in the line of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, contains all the elements of realism: the underworld, poverty, violence, adultery, murder, etc.
In Gianni Schicchi, Puccini returns to the Italian comic opera tradition with its conflicts caused by love and the family in an ironic look at class differences and the moral decadence of fallen aristocrats.
