La Gran Vía

(F. Chueca y J. Valverde)

La Gran Vía de F. Chueca y J. Valverde

Teatro Fernán Gómez - Madrid (Spain)

Première June 23, 2017

The Gran Via is an icon in the Zarzuela repertoire.

This dramatic proposal is a new version of this operatic gem. A Spanish family (Zarzuela singers) living in Buenos Aires receives an unexpected postcard with news from Madrid which causes great excitement and brings back memories and smells of a distant Madrid. One of the family hums the start of La Gran Via, triggering the whole cast’s emotional recollections of the years when they performed this Zarzuela, night after night, to a full house back in Madrid. Suddenly there is a knock at the door. It’s the producer who left them stranded in the middle of their tour. He brings great news: La Gran Via is to go back on stage, as from today. Eager to rehearse, even in this close family environment, they gradually bring out the grandeur and timeliness of the Zarzuela that had brought them great success.
