Reinette, a young girl, is a goddaughter of Mathieu, the village violinist. She is in love with Pierre, who has been called into the army. But Pierre doesn't want to go and has to pay 2.000 francos if he wants to get away. So Reinette asks Mathieu, who refuses. After an argument with him Reinette breaks Mathieu's old violin revealing his secrets..
