"Poeta en Nueva York" (Poet in New York) is a turning point in the work of Federico García Lorca.
It is the estrangement in the mirror, as he himself commented in a letter to his friend Carlos Mora Lynch: "I don't know why I left; I ask myself a hundred times a day. I look at myself in the mirror of the cramped cabin and I don't recognize myself.
I look like another Federico." That's right, another Federico appears in this work. Or perhaps, and why not, "other Federicos" who simultaneously speak to us of their emotions and feelings in the face of the impact of what their eyes see. As his first encounter with New York City attests: "The two elements that the traveler captures in the big city are: inhuman architecture and furious rhythm. Geometry and anguish."
An anguish that he transforms into poetry and leads us to the encounter of primitive and hidden forces. This is how his discourse becomes complex in metaphors and symbolism charged with social denunciation, moral questioning, and loneliness.
